The Impact of a Short Term Missions Trip

During this year’s OG Summit I taught a class on Short Term Mission Trips.  I wanted Missionary Matt Allen to take a few minutes and speak about his field in person, but unfortunately he wasn’t able to because he was teaching another class at the same time.  Instead, he wrote out a testimony that I have placed below that really touched my heart.  He also wanted me to let others know that currently, from people visiting him on the field, there are 6 families on deputation who are raising support for Papua New Guinea, and two more that are starting this year

What I’ve Learned Along The Trail (Part 2)

As we set out a year ago, I could not imagine all that we would see, do, and learn along the way. Growing up in basically the same town, going to the same church, and knowing the same people all my life, I had a lot to learn about the world in which we live. Here are some more lessons, in no real order, from the “Deputation Trail” Check HERE for Part 1 -Deputation is hard work, yet very rewarding -No amount of work replaces the hand of God -There are A LOT of good churches out there -People are different, and so am I -Not everyone does everything the same way -I can learn from every church and from every pastor that I meet -People that complain about deputation probably aren’t working hard -I really love my family -I really love my pastor -I really love my church -The generosity of many churches is overwhelming -I don’t like driving nearly as much as I thought I did -I would be fine to never see a McDonalds again -It is important to enjoy life with my family, no matter where we are -We live in a beautiful country and there is so much to see -God really does provide, and it is awesome to see every month -So thankful that I had proper training before heading out, that is invaluable -The importance of having a team to turn to for help is priceless -Being on deputation is no excuse for not being active in my church when home -It is easy to become a robot -It is easy to neglect my personal responsibility to witness while talking about what I will do oversees Read more missionary blogs at bcwe.org

What I’ve Learned Along The Trail (Part 1)

January 2, 2011 we set out on what they call the “Deputation Trail”. We did not have a scheduled meeting for that Sunday, but we were determined to start raising our funds for the mission field the first of the year. So, as nervous as I think I have ever been, we dropped into a small country church in the hills of Tennessee. To my surprise, it was not nearly as scary as I had first thought it might be

The Gospel Tract

I know that this is an odd subject to write about. Not that the Gospel would be odd for me to talk about but the fact I am talking about a piece of paper on a blog. I have always been intrigued by the Gospel tract. In the small church I grew up attending we had a rack of tracts called Chick Tracts

Walking away at crunch time – part 2

Are you serious?  Could you possibly be inferring that Latin America doesn’t need anymore missionaries?  Should we celebrate and retire because our job is done in Latin America? The above picture is actually from the back of a prayer card I picked up from a fellow missionary at a conference a few months ago.  Not surprisingly, his ministry focuses on the 10/40 window.

both/and not either/or

Some people are single focused missionaries.  They think about and promote their field and only their field.  After reading Walking Away at Crunch Time  and Death by Bullet or Antifreeze , you might think I’m one of those single focused guys, but that could not be further from the truth. Missions is not an either/or proposition.  Missions is a both/and proposition.

November ’11 Prayer Letter

Dear Praying Friends, Well, I have decided two things today: 1, truck drivers deserve more respect than they get. And 2… I don’t want to be one! Today finds us in the middle of the longest roadtrip we have attempted thus far on deputation: 5 days of driving from Cincinnati to home, home to Tucson AZ, and Tucson to Los Angeles CA. I’m excited about the meetings ahead of us this month, and for more than just the chance to get out of the car. God has really been good to us in opening doors to present our ministry in wonderful churches! PRAISES: We now have a reliable minivan! I wanted to say a huge thank you to Tim Ellison, owner of “Mr Godwrench” in West Chester OH for setting us up with a much nicer vehicle than we would have been able to afford without his  help

Death by bullet or antifreeze

A few years back a lady in my home town was convicted of murdering two men.  Her weapon of choice was antifreeze.  Death by antifreeze is slow and virtually undetectable by the victim.   Its sweet taste makes an easy cover to disguise the poison.  She slowly added antifreeze to the food of both her victims, until they were dead!  A bullet is a completely different story.
