Numbers 11:11-17 “And Moses said unto the LORD, Wherefore hast thou afflicted thy servant? and wherefore have I not found favour in thy sight, that thou layest the burden of all this people upon me? 12Have I conceived all this people? have I begotten them, that thou shouldest say unto me, Carry them in thy bosom, as a nursing father beareth the sucking child, unto the land which thou swarest unto their fathers? 13Whence should I have flesh to give unto all this people? for they weep unto me, saying, Give us flesh, that we may eat. 14I am not able to bear all this people alone, because it is too heavy for me. 15And if thou deal thus with me, kill me, I pray thee, out of hand, if I have found favour in thy sight; and let me not see my wretchedness. 16And the LORD said unto Moses, Gather unto me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom thou knowest to be the elders of the people, and officers over them; and bring them unto the tabernacle of the congregation, that they may stand there with thee. 17And I will come down and talk with thee there: and I will take of the spirit which is upon thee, and will put it upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with thee, that thou bear it not thyself alone.”
Moses as fed up with looking after the Israelite people. He was their leader, and he had several million of them to look after. God did many miraculous things for, but, despite all God’s blessing, they continued to complain and be unhappy.
Moses cried out to the Lord and asked why he was responsible to look after them. He could not handle it any more. He was exhausted, and he was frustrated. A big part of his problem was that he was trying to carry the burden of leadership alone.
Moses was the human leader, but he needed to remember that there is a Divine leader who is ultimately in charge. God will never give us more responsibility than we can handle.
God also can give and raise up others to help us carry the burden. God was going to take of the spirit that Moses had and put it upon the seventy elders. They would help him to bear the burden.
Often we get tired and frustrated in the ministry because we try to do too much ourselves. We take all the responsibility on ourselves. We do no trust God to raise up other leaders and we refuse to share the burden. We need to stop trying to carry it alone and realise that God has given His Holy Spirit to others who are gifted for ministry as well.
