Language Learning
I have no doubt that there are going to be plenty of views out there concerning this subject. Though you may disagree, I firmly believe you will limit your ministry and effectiveness if you do not learn the language of the people to which you will minister. I hear all the time here in the states, “I wish those people would learn our language!” If we feel that way about them not learning “our language”, what makes it ok for us not to learn theirs? Do we really thing because we are American that they enjoy listening to us through an interpreter??
Begin now studying about language learning. Be careful speaking the language because once you “have it down” it will be hard to change and most of us are not going to learn it right the first time. Remember it may sound correct to you, but you are not the judge. Let a national help you.
There is a book called LAMP. This will be an excellent guide and starter as you establish your plan of action concerning language acquisition. You AND your wife need to learn the language. Do not let the children, schooling, schedule or anything else get in the way. You must be committed to the importance of learning the language. Speak with veteran missionaries who have learned the language and get pointers from them. Start now so you can be ready later.
