Let Us Make Us A Name
In the day and age in which we live, everyone is trying to “make a name” for themselves. I say in this day and age, but it is pretty much in every day and age. In Genesis 11 we find the people wanting to build a city and tower which would reach heaven. Was it to reach heaven or be known on earth? What was the motivation for a tower that would reach heaven?
I may want to condemn the inhabitants of Genesis 11 but I fear, I too, have dwelt there many a night. Wanting to be known, popular, accepted, liked, esteemed haunts me at times. A man that enters deputation (ministry) with the thought that he is going to make a name for himself is in a lot of trouble. How many “big name” preachers have we seen fall? (and I realize there are plenty of “small name” preachers as well) Is is not amazing that we actually use a term like, “Big Name” preacher. Am I building my name or making His name known in all the earth?
It is amazing that in Genesis 11 they are trying to make their name known but in Genesis 12, God tells Abraham, “I will make thy name great”. Is God able to work in our lives? Are we trying to take His place? Today would you believe and trust God? This does not mean you do not do anything. It means that we must remember our responsibility and that is obedience. May God find us obedient today with the motivation that we want to serve and please Him. May we reach the place that our name means nothing and His means everything.
