Apollos – The Man with a Teachable Spirit – Pt. 2
Yesterday we looked at some qualities of Apollos that were remarkable. There were many qualities about him that we would love to have in our own lives. He was eloquent, educated, passionate, persuasive, etc. Yet the one thing I love about this man is that with all he had going for him he was still teachable.
Are you teachable? Am I teachable? When we enter a conversation, is it one sided with us trying to tell all we know? (I wonder why my conversations are so short!) With some guys on deputation I wonder who is the director and who just started? They seem to be confused about it as well!
Some thoughts to consider:
1. Though Apollos was an educated man with abilities that did not stop him from learning from a husband/wife team. Just because I have one ability does not mean that I possess all abilities and just because I have a certain ability, does not mean that others abilities are less important and mine more important.
2. Though Apollos knew the Scripture, he did not know everything about the Scripture. Some guys read one book and become an expert in all the things of God. Realize what you do not know and start studying.
3. Of all the people to instruct this man of God, it was a man and wife. (Aquila and Priscilla). Are there certain people you will not learn from? For whatever reason they can not teach you?
4. Do away with an attitude that thinks, “I have arrived”. I recommend you get back in the car because we still have a long journey ahead of us!!
5. Overcome your success. Looking back on what you have accomplished and using it will only kill your future. If all our illustrations from our personal life are over a year old, we may be in trouble.
6. Do not take shortcuts. Anything of value has a price. I purchased some dress shirt one time for $5.00 each only to have the arms come off in the dryer after washing them the first time. You get what you pay for!
7. Acknowledge and remove pride. You and I may know something, but we do not know everything.
8. Learn from mistakes. What did we do wrong last year that we can learn from this year. I was talking with one of our missionaries today and he said that for the first part of deputation he messed up. He then went on to acknowledge his mistake and the changes he had made to rectify it. I was very proud of him.
Maybe you would ask the Lord to help you have a teachable spirit. A great friend of mine, Austin Gardner, has got to be the most question askin’ man I have ever met! One day (night) we were driving back from an ordination service in Ohio and for the whole trip he asked me questions. Wow! That is 7-8 hours of questions. I was not impressed with my answers but that he could think of that many questions!!
I want to be like Apollos….but that means that I must be teachable. As I pray for you, would you pray for me in this area?
